Susana on Andy Nunez falling out: “You can’t stick to one single issue”

Politics ain’t beanbag and Gov. Susana Martinez didn’t offer any apologies on Monday (Nov. 5) for sending out negative mailers on state Rep. Andy Nuñez (I-Hatch).

“You can’t just stick to one single issue,” Gov. Martinez told Capitol Report New Mexico of the falling out she had with Nuñez a little more than a week ago, after working with the only Independent in the Roundhouse for the last two years on repealing the state’s controversial law that grants driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. “We’ve got to be able to get people who want to change New Mexico in a big way, in a quick way, in a stable way.”

Here’s the Q&A:

Nuñez is running in a three-way race to retain his House seat in District 36 in the southern part of the state against Democrat Phillip Archuleta and Republican Mike Tellez. Nuñez served in the Roundhouse as a Democrat for more than 10 years but switched to “Decline To State” in January of 2011 after trying to oust Speaker of the House Ben Luján (D-Nambé).

“I’m surprised and I’m pissed,” Nuñez told Capitol Report New Mexico on Oct. 26 after a negative mailer came out from Reform New Mexico Now, an independent expenditure PAC associated with Martinez, criticizing Nuñez for voting in 2009 for a bill that led to the repeal of the death penalty in the state.

Nuñez said an internal poll his campaign conducted showed him with a slight lead on Archuleta and Tellez but some political operatives have told Capitol Report New Mexico of other polls showing Nuñez behind.

Should Nuñez win, it will mark the first time in Roundhouse history that a “Decline To State” candidate has won in November.
